INTERVIEW WITH CHRISTOPHER MALCOLM
Lainie, where are you based out of? Is this where you grew up?
"I was born and raised in Franklin, NC. I am also currently based there."
How would you describe the industry in your city?
"There isn't really any film industry to speak of that I'm aware of. We have the occasional film pass through and film a few scenes in the surrounding area, but it is a dead industry as far as having active members that bring their expertise to the community. It's a shame because it is a beautiful area full of interesting and beautiful people. We do have talented individuals that call this place home, but they tend to move away and work in other active film industries."
What are your thoughts about working on a film here in the Upstate of South Carolina?
"It's very exciting to have a production of this caliber filming in Upstate, SC. There is so much untapped potential in the communities there and I think that this film will open a lot of eyes to that. I've worked on a lot of sets, from major productions to small indie films and this has easily been one of the most impressive ones I've been on. The level of talent, professionalism, and vision is unreal. On top of all that, the people are a dream to work with. Kind, caring, ambitious, and gifted. It feels like a family that is carefully and lovingly creating something special."
Let's get into the history... How did you get your start as an actor?
"My story isn't that different from a lot of others. I was very interested in acting at a young age and started my journey into the art in middle school theater class. From there I found that I had a passion for the craft and felt a calling for it. I continued my pursuit of acting through high school, college, and years of acting classes, gaining more experience and working on honing my skills. I got my start by simply being around passionate people that share the same interests as myself. There's no official start. You just work on any project that talented, like-minded people want to create and you bring that world to life as best as you can."
Who is your celebrity crush and why?
"I would have to say Rachel McAdams. It's that smile. It feels so warm and uplifting. She just feels so kind and genuine when she speaks and not to mention she's a fantastic actor that always finds the empathy of a role."
Which actor/actress would you compare yourself to?
"This is a hard one because most actors have an idea of who they think they are or who they want to be like in their own mind vs what others see. But I think my "look" and the types of roles that I go out for are comparable to Cillian Murphy."
Who inspired you to become an entertainer?
"Honestly, it all started when I was a kid. Watching these larger than life characters on tv or playing as these heroes in video games. You find yourself recreating these iconic moments on the playground that you saw on the screen. My middle school theater teacher, Scotty Corbin, was really the first outside force that encouraged me and gave me confidence in my acting ability. The confidence to let go and play. I've had the itch ever since then."
What aspirations do you have? Any specific projects, genres, or characters?
"I would say that I aspire to simply work as an actor. There are so many roles and genres I would love to tackle, but I always feel lucky to audition for any role in a project. I love horror so this film is a dream come true. It's fun to see how it is crafted vs feeling the anxiety and fear creep in while watching a movie like All That is Evil. I would love to someday tackle a fantasy based film. Space, medieval, alternate universes. I love it all. But if I had to name a specific case off of the top of my head? I dream of a day when they make a sequel to "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" and they allow me to be part of it."
Tell us a little bit about your character in All That Is Evil.
"I play Elijah in All That is Evil. I like to think of Elijah as everyone's ex. Ex best friend, ex boyfriend, ex coworker. He's the guy that you probably share some great memories with, but you currently don't look at the guy in a favorable light. He's a guy that means well, but always gets in his own way. He is the master of self sabotage. He plays an important role in the events that take place in the small town. The dilemma is, can you trust him?"
You've read the script... What do you think will excite audiences about All That Is Evil?
"I have a deep love for the Horror genre. I grew up watching all the classics. From slashers to super naturals to found footage. This film definitely brings the gore and fear that you expect from a scary movie. But I think what sets this film apart from other horror films is that this film has heart. It's a story about regret and those that are left behind to pick up the pieces when tragedy strikes. The film tackles tough questions, like what happens to the relationships in a small town living in a recurring nightmare? How is human nature affected and how does it carry on? What is love, loss, fear, hope? I would tell audiences, 'come for the scares, stay for the drama.'"
